Learning outside the classroom is a passion of mine. Now don’t get me wrong, I still love engaging in great discussions with my students in the classroom, but there is nothing comparable to walking the paths of Boneza, Rwanda with Arise Rwanda Ministries or visiting with our friends at Casa Viva in San José, Costa Rica and dialoguing on what we are learning together. Some of my most memorable learning outside the classroom has taken place in cross-cultural contexts, but so many local opportunities have also deeply impacted myself and students over the years. Visiting local monasteries and reflecting on vocational goals, dialoguing and learning in community with faith leaders in their places of worship.

Boneza, Rwanda

When you get the chance, have a listen to what we are up to here at Multnomah in the most recent episode of MU Talks – How Do We Learn Outside The Classroom. It was a joy to join with Multnomah University’s Provost Alin Vrancila, Professor Renee Duffy and MAGDJ student Kailani Smith discussing how we learn outside of the classroom through formal academic partnerships and assignments. I also got the opportunity to brag a little on the work that Kailani has done with the Center for Public Justice around WIC (Women, Infants and Children) support in our local community.
